Shallana and Randy were married in a private, small ceremony over the summer and asked if I could take some Detroit Institute of Arts wedding portraits to celebrate their marriage. I said, of course! I love photographing these two! Detroit Institute of Arts wedding portraits hold a special place in my heart because this location is where we took our wedding photos. Something about the classic look of the marble just always makes everyone look incredible. So gorgeous.
I wish them all the happiness in the world — they deserve it! You can always do a session to celebrate an anniversary or just because. Plus portrait sessions are much more laid back than weddings. More time to really relax and have fun in front of the camera! I love when couples want to incorporate locations that are meaningful to them into their sessions, and I highly encourage it!

Their church, St. Joseph Shrine, is very important to them, so we decided to use it as our main backdrop. Joseph Shrine is a historic church located in Eastern Market in Detroit. The church dates back to and has absolutely gorgeous architecture. I love the doorways and old stone so I tried to incorporate that during our session. We decided to head over to Gratiot for a few city shots as well.
8 romantic (and unusual) places in detroit for a date night
I love that rainbow brick wall! Jordan and Nathan are so sweet! I loved hanging out with them and getting to know them. The incredible Rosa Alcantara did it! I highly recommend Rosa! We actually shot this session in the middle of the day which can be really scary for some photographers! Stay tuned for the gorgeous images from that day! To see another Eastern Market engagement session. Lauren and Seth love the outdoors so a sunset Stony Creek engagement session was perfect for them!
The first time we scheduled their engagement session, the weather forecast was cloudy, but still fine for photos. However, after shooting for about thirty minutes, it started to RAIN! Out of nowhere, with 20 percent chance on the forecast! So we decided to postpone the session and try again in a week or so. Good thing because we got the most incredible sunset for their session!
A sunset Stony Creek engagement session is perfect for summer engagements. The large fields and pine covered trail at Stony Creek is a beautiful backdrop in any season, but in summer, it just feels so lush and green.
They asked me so many good questions about my work and myself, and I got to know their story too. They wanted to have some celebratory fun so we popped some champagne at their session.
Highly recommend because those photos are always so fun to have and edit! Our session ended at Yates Cider Mill for ice cream, as requested by these two. Ice cream is always a good way to end a summer session, especially a sunset Stony Creek engagement session. Emilie happened to win my engagement session giveaway last December right after she booked her wedding!
I absolutely love that her and Nico took my advice and had an Eastern Market engagement session. And I think I was right! We started at the Dequindre Cut which is connected to Eastern Market. One of my favorite parts of this entire area is all the great art!
And it changes all the time. Every time I visit the Eastern Market area, I find new backgrounds and textures to use. I think the Dequindre Cut and Eastern Market are underused for photography sessions. But I love the colorful, playfulness of this part of the city so much. Emilie and Nico are just so natural in front of the camera. We had a TON of fun exploring. I left having laughed more than I had in a longgggg time. The funniest part of this session is that they brought a letter board with their wedding date on it. Love Eastern Market? Check out this spring Eastern Market engagement session!
Or this winter Eastern Market engagement session. I was so excited this summer to finally get to shoot a downtown Grand Rapids engagement session! I spent four years in West Michigan for college Go Hope! When Erika and Will booked me for their September wedding, they knew they wanted to use the city as a backdrop for their engagement session!
During this downtown Grand Rapids engagement session, we stopped at quite a few landmarks around the city, including this awesome mid-century wall, murals over on Library Street, and of course the infamous Blue Bridge.
Does anyone really make it out of Grand Rapids without using the Blue Bridge somehow? Erika and Will are college sweethearts and met at Central Michigan University. Right before their engagement session bought a house AND got the most adorable golden retriever puppy, Nala.
We headed to Provin Trails just outside the city to meet Nala and get some nature photos because these two love to spend time outside! Nala was just as sweet as can be wait until you see her in their wedding photos from September, my oh my she got big. She was so good for the camera.
I love visiting the Michigan State University campus in all seasons check this fall Michigan State University engagement session from here for more MSU lovebut summer seems quieter, less busy. These two actually met in high school, and attended MSU together, so the backdrop made the perfect fit for their engagement session. Josh even proposed at the opening home football game on the bridge by the stadium in ! MSU is embedded in their love story so we wanted to use a variety of spots on campus that make for beautiful photos.
It was so much more meaningful to talk about their time at MSU and hear some of their favorite memories.
The MSU campus is one of my favorite campuses to photograph on. Summer means lots of green, which is perfect for MSU fans. Search for:.
